ADHD Awareness Month is every October, but for the ADHD community, awareness is a 365-day-a-year endeavour. Here is how to meaningfully show up for the neurodivergent people in your life, and what not to say.
What ADHD Actually Looks Like
Hollywood ADHD is a hyperactive child who cannot sit still. Real ADHD is far more varied. It is the adult who has read the same paragraph six times and still cannot retain it. It is the person with seventeen browser tabs open and a half-finished coffee from three hours ago. It is the brilliant creative who cannot start the thing they most want to do because of executive dysfunction.
ADHD affects attention regulation, not just attention. That means people with ADHD can hyperfocus intensely on things that interest them, sometimes for hours, while struggling to direct that same focus to tasks they need to do.
Common ADHD Misconceptions
- Everyone gets distracted. Yes, but ADHD distraction is qualitatively different and consistently interferes with daily function.
- ADHD is overdiagnosed. The diagnostic criteria are stringent and many people, especially women and people of colour, are chronically underdiagnosed.
- Medication is a crutch. Stimulant medication is one of the most evidence-based treatments in psychiatry.
- You just need to try harder. Executive dysfunction is neurological, not motivational.
How to Support Someone with ADHD
The most powerful thing you can do is listen without trying to fix. When someone shares their ADHD experience, they often do not need a solution. They need to feel understood. Ask how you can help rather than assuming.
Practical support looks like: sending a text reminder for something important, not making a big deal out of lateness when someone is genuinely struggling, and creating environments that work for different kinds of minds.
Wear It, Share It, Mean It
Visibility matters. When someone with ADHD sees a stranger wearing a shirt that says My ADHD Took Over, it does something small but real: it signals that they are not alone, and that their experience is known and shared.
That is the spirit behind everything at Brain on Shuffle. Browse our ADHD awareness tees, mugs and accessories and wear your brain proudly this October and beyond.
